Welcome to the website for playwright and screenwriter Alex Broun. One of the world's most produced ten minute playwrights Alex has had over 30 short plays produced all over the world from South Africa to Spain in nearly 100 productions. He has also had over 20 full length plays produced across the globe as well as having two short screenplays filmed during the last twelve months. He has also twice received funding from the Australian Film Commission. On this website you will find all of Alex's ten minute and full length plays, feature and short screenplays as well as collections of poetry. And here's the good news - for the next two years - till December 31st, 2009 - all scripts on this website are available to be produced by anyone, anywhere in the world - absolutely FREE. That's right - no royalties, copyright fees, deposits - nothing at all. Just read through the descriptions of scripts to find something that suits your needs, download the script and get rehearsing.  The only condition is you must email Alex and let him know where and when you produced his script, listing the director, cast and theatre. If you have any production photos send them along as well and they may just end up on this website. There's everything you can think of from huge cast plays suitable for drama schools and youth theatres to three minute monologues perfect for your next audition - and they're all available free ! About Alex Broun Born in Sydney Alex has enjoyed considerable success in theatre, TV and film as a writer, actor and director and worked extensively as an activist for refugee rights with the Refugee Action Coalition (RAC).  As a writer he has had many plays performed in the USA, South Africa, the UK, Europe, England and Australia. Among his performed full length plays are Vicious Streaks, Blind City, Pick Ups, Desire, Scenes From An Affair, Just Once, Potential for Violence, The Critic, The Jacaranda Tree and The Prince of Brunswick East. A specialist in short plays, in recent years he has had over 30 ten minute plays produced in nearly 100 productions in Australia, Singapore, the UK, Europe and the USA. In terms of awards Pick Ups was nominated for the Vita Award for Best New Play in South Africa in 1998 and Just Once won the STC's Young Playwright's Scheme in 1985 and was workshopped at the Australian National Playwright's Conference the same year. Blind City was performed as part of Two Up ! at The Darlinghurst Theatre as part of the 2003 Sydney Festival. Three of his plays - Pick Ups, Desire, Scenes From An Affair - were performed as a trilogy under the title Fast Love in Cape Town, South Africa in 2000. The Jacaranda Tree was short listed in the 2004 Rodney Seaborn Playwright's Award, received an Honourable Mention in the Virtual Theatre Project's International Play Competition of 2004 and was workshopped as a part of Theatrelab 2005. He received funding from the Australian Film Commission to write a script, Dead in the Water, based on the sinking of the Siev X in October 2001 when 353 innocent asylum seekers lost their lives. This was the second time he had receive funding from the AFC following his fifty-minute feature Clean Time which received Script Development funding. He co-produced Refugitive, a one man play by Iranian refugee, actor and playwright Shahin Shafaei about his experiences in the Curtin Detention Centre which toured nationally.  Directing credits include: Assistant Director to George Ogilvie on Bellini's Norma for the Australian Opera in Melbourne and Sydney; Director, world premiere of Alan Seymour's play The End for The 2004 Short & Sweet Festival (also starring Alan Seymour), Assistant Director to George Ogilvie again on David Auburn's Proof at the Sydney Theatre Company (Drama Theatre, Opera House and Glen Street Theatre) and Resident Director on John Breen's Alone It Stands, originally directed by Wayne Harrison for Mollisons. Alex is the Artistic Co-ordinator of Short & Sweet, the largest ten minute play festival in the world, a position he has held since 2003. Alex has also worked extensively as a journalist/broadcaster in rugby union and in 2001 served as Media Liaison for the British and Irish Lions on their tour of Australia and acted as Media Liaison for the Springbok rugby team from 1996 to 2000.
